| Description |
English: New Saltmarsh. This is the view from one of the hides on 55336. If you had been standing here five years ago all you would have seen is stubble. In October 2002 the breach you can see in the sea wall was made. What you can see is the result of five years of regeneration of the marsh after 300 years behind a sea wall. This is one of the largest "managed retreats" in Europe. Over the past 25 years Essex has lost nearly 40% of its saltmarsh to land reclamation. Essex Wildlife Trust has reclaimed 200 acres of mudflat and saltmarsh with this project. For more info see http://www.essexwt.org.uk/sites/Abbotts%20Hall%20Farm.htm |
