It is very odd to watch the blackballs of smoke suddenly appear in space out of nothing, and realize thatthey are meant for you. Later in June Lieut. Jerome was assigned, with Lieut. Ross J.Hoffman, of Philadelphia, to a French escadrille, stationed nearNancy. Here he met his death from a German anti-aircraft gun, onJuly 11, while patrolling the French lines. GILBERT NELSON JEROME within the enemy lines, and he was buried by the French people ofBlamont, Meuthe-et-Moselle, in a German military cemetery, withmilitary honors by the enemy. Lieut. Jerome was among the 16 chosen from 800 contestants forthe 1000-franc prize offered by the N.Y. Herald in Paris. Hispoem which follows was ranked 7 on the list.
