Text Appearing Before Image:
The Bodies were waiting for us there and about forty of themjumped us. We were only eight. It was a real fight. We got the first one tocome up, but there were a lot behind him. I was running short of ammuni-tion and the bullets were snapping close to my ears. Then the gas tankwas hit low and the gas ran out. At the same time I was shooting at adevil that had come up rather too close. My left arm was across my chest, the wrist being about over my heart, when I felt a bump and saw my glovetorn just above the wrist. I lost the use of that arm, but I could nt helpbut smile to have my arm over my chest just at that moment. I turned totell Brooke that I was hit and out of ammunition and the gas tank waspunctured. As I turned I saw him put his hand up to his head. NaturallyI thought he had got a load of lead. I sat down and took control of theplane from the rear seat. I put the plane into a steep nose-dive. KARL C. PAYNE from about 14,000 to 2000 feet, we could see the infantry below us — and itwas German infantry. Brooke took control of the plane and levelled out, trying to glide without motor to our own lines. However, as soon as welevelled out, the Huns — three of them — caught up with us and the bul-lets snapped close again. They shot the fur off my collar and I saw it flyingup as the bullet passed through. Then they shot through my sleeve up nearmy shoulder. I had about ten bullets left and feel pretty sure that I got oneof the Huns with these. But the game was up, they drove us to the groundin the German infantry. They were round us the minute we landed. And I really believe that, but for a German non-com who ran up, I would not be writing this now.But the non-com came and they dressed my arm. Then they marched usback, to the artillery and the artillery took us back to Loupy. Lieut. Payne was later taken to Virton and finally to KarlsruhePrison. He escaped from Karlsruhe on Nov
