rack team in 1915 at college. On March 12,1917, he enlisted in the Aviation Service at Charles-town, Mass., and was ordered to the Naval Station at Newport,R.I., on April 3. He responded to the call for naval aviators, andwas sent to M.I.T. Ground School for instruction on Sept. 15, 1917.Having finished the course there on Nov. 10, he was ordered to theU.S. Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Fla. On Feb. 14, 1918, he wascommissioned Ensign, and sailed for France on March 23. UntilAug. 1, 1918, he was stationed for bombing-training at Moutchic-Lacanau, Gironde. He was then ordered to U.S. Naval Air Stationat Fromentine, Vendee, and served on patrol duty there until theend of the war. He was commissioned Lieut, (j.g.) on Oct. 1, 1918.He returned to the U.S. on Dec. 16, 1918, and was stationed atHampton Roads, Va., until released from active service. Brothers in Service — Arthur H. HORACE SARGENT HINDS Ensign, Bombing Squadron, Pensacola, Fla. Son of Fred C. and Emma R. Hinds, of Newtonville, Mass.; wasborn at Chelsea, Mass., Jan. 4, 1886. He was educated at the New-ton High School, and Mass. Institute of Technology. He playedon the football team at high school, and also at M.I.T. On May 3, 1917, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve, at Newport,R.L, where he trained in the Seamans branch. He then transferredto Aviation, and trained at the Ground School, M.I.T., from Feb.,1918. He had elementary flying at Miami, Fla., and advanced fly-ing at Pensacola, Fla., where he was commissioned Ensign, on Sept.6, 1918. At Miami he acted as submarine coast-patrol, and atPensacola, served as bombing-pilot, and as instructor in bombing.In the spring of 1919 Ensign Hinds was promoted to DivisionCommander of the Bombing Squadron, at Pensacola, and is stillin Service in that capacity.
