equent bombing raids, and didnotable service until Sept. 4, 1918, when he was wounded in actionvery severely. For his bravery at this time he was recommended foradvanced flying rating by the War Department, on the date of Sept.4, 1918, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross on Jan.18, 1919. The ceremony was performed on the steps of the U.S.Army General Hospital, No. 10, Parker Hill Avenue, Roxbury,Mass., by Colonel Joseph Taylor Clarke, Commandant, while themedical department of that institution, 600 men and 50 officers,stood at attention. CitationD.S.C. While on a bombing expedition with other planes of his squadron, heengaged in a running fight over hostile territory with a superior number ofenemy battle planes from Friauville to Lamorville, France. During thecombat he was severely wounded, his right thigh being shattered. Inspite of his injuries he continued to operate his machine guns until thehostile formation had been driven off and one plane shot down burning. ( 152 )

GILBERT STANLEY First Lieutenant, A.S., U.S.A., Ninety-Sixth Aero SquadronFirst Day Bombardment Group Son of William and Lila Courtney (Wetmore) Stanley, of GreatBarrington, Mass.; was born Jan. 14, 1897, at Pittsfield, Mass.;educated at the Berkshire School, Sheffield, Conn., and at YaleCollege, where he spent two years. He enlisted on June 10, 1917, at New York. He graduated fromthe Cornell Ground School, in the class of Oct. 13, 1917, and sailedfor France as a cadet, Oct. 21, 1917. He was employed at first inbuilding the 3d Aviation Instruction Centre at Issoudun. AboutMarch 1 he was assigned to St.-Maixent, and April 15 to his firstflying school at Tours. He received his brevet and his commissionas 1st Lieut, on June 7, 1918. In Sept. he was sent to Issoudun, forfurther training, and later transferred to Clermont-Ferrand.
