Text Appearing Before Image:
a-firma safely was concerned. It was pitch dark and we flew for a long timeon a straight course that we knew would ultimately take us over thelines. We finally recognized a river that we knew was in France. So far sogood. The next question was how to find a good field or our own fieldto land on. Of course, all lights are out in this country and consequentlythere were very few landmarks. The moon finally came out, and by theaid of this we were able to follow rivers and the shapes of certain forests, and finally, in the direction of our field, we saw some flares. Perhaps wewerent pleased! Three of the machines smashed in landing, but theteams were not hurt. I was the only one who did not damage a machine. One team did not return and I have just heard that the pilot was killedin trying to land. It was too bad as he was a fine chap from Princeton. This letter was prefaced by the words: Just a note before Istart out for a hard days work. From this flight Lieut. Hopkinsdid not return. ( 134 )
