ion,and after firing a burst of forty shots, it crashed to the ground. (Confirmedin Operations Report No. 18, Hdqrs. 1st Pursuit Group, June 16, 1918.) (6) On May 30, 1918, Lieutenant Mitchell at 8.15 a.m. encountered twoenemy airplanes in the vicinity of Apremont, who turned and headed to-ward the lines. He caught up with the rear German airplane, and fired185 rounds from above. The German dove into a nose-dive and crashed tothe ground in flames. (Confirmed in Operations Report No. 18, Hdqrs. 1stPursuit Group, June 1G, 1918.) (c) On July 5, 1918, Lieutenant Mitchell, near Priez, encountered sixenemy Albatross monoplanes. He attacked the highest one and engagedin a running fight, lasting twenty minutes, which terminated by the Ger-man bursting intoflames. (Confirmed in Operations Report, Hdqrs. 1stPursuit Group, Order No. 59.) Attest: David McK. Peterson On Aug. 1, 1918, Lieut. Mitchell was commissioned Captain,and on Oct. 13, 1918, he was placed in command of the 95thSquadron. r 56 )

Seeingthree enemy planes flying east over Apremont, at 2500 metres, CaptainMitchell unhesitatingly attacked the three machines, which were in closeformation, despite the fact that a fourth, hovering above, threatened toclose in and join the enemy formation. He succeeded in shooting down theenemy machine, which proved to be a biplane returning from an importantmission.
