This is a remarkable showing for a city as small as New Bed-ford was then, and whose chief industry received a tremendous blow 24 NEW BEDFORD. from the war. But we think it was not so remarkable as the workof the women of New Bedford in their appropriate way in aid of thewar for the Union. Two days after the first men left New Bedfordfor southern battlefields, the women of the city had a meeting andorganized for the work. How well they succeeded is shown by therecord of their contributions for the relief and comfort of the soldiers.The Ladies Soldiers Relief Society gave upwards of $20,000 inmoney ; in cotton cloth and flannel, $4000 ; and in hospital stores,$6000. The Society for the Comfort and Relief of our Soldiers inHospitals gave an immense amount of clothing and hospital stores,aggregating many thousand dollars in value. CHAPTER II. THE WHALE-FISHERY

William W.Crapo, in an oration delivered at themunicipal celebration of the centen-nial of national independence, thatthey cannot be separated ; and norecord of the growth and business ofour town and city can be completewithout it. Our wealth, our population, and our progress have beenthe fruits of this industry ; and our position and fame among thecities of the world is due to its successful prosecution. The thriving manufacturing cit^^ of New Bedford of 1888 isthe outgrowth of a settlement of fishermen,— fishermen on a largescale,— who drew to them the mechanics and traders needed to sup-ply their wants and formed the nucleus of the city of today. NewBedfords wealth was brought from the depths of the ocean by hersons, who braved every danger, accepted every hazard, and fear-lessly entered unknown regions in pursuit of their prey.
