HALLS TOBACCO PLANTATION 327 Holmes was in occupation of ex-Director Van Twillerstobacco plantation at Sapokanican near the later Greenwichvillage, and in all probability they had been there for at leasta year or two before that date. Hall, who was a native of Gloucestershire in the west ofEngland, appears to have been one of a little band of colonistswho, after a short sojourn in New England, concluded toestablish themselves, without seeking any ones permission,in the lands claimed by the Dutch along the Delaware River.Made prisoners and brought to New Amsterdam in 1635,several of these colonists determined to become subjects ofthe Dutch and to establish themselves in New Amsterdam,and among these, as it is supposed, were both Hall andHolmes.
