other purposes than those of commerce. In November, 1654, it was hired by the burgomasters for the temporary re-ception of fifty boys and girls sent over from the almshouseat Amsterdam, — an experiment by the magistrates of thatcity. These children were to be bound out for the term offive years, after which period each was to receive fifty-threeacres of land. Nor was Allertons warehouse devoid of his-torical associations. ATTACK ON THE WAREHOUSE 337 his premises, on pretence of searching for two Indians. There is indeed no telling to what lengths the Indians mighthave proceeded upon this occasion, for they were in numberfive or six hundred, and all of this portion of the town was intheir power. A panic seized them, andthey scurried away into the Kreupelbosch and behind thehill back of Thomas Halls house, to get out of range of theguns in the vessel. It is quite probable that these depreda-tions by the natives led to the subsequent construction ofpalisades around Allertons place, for in the Dukes Plan of 1661, the building appears to stand in an enclosure. As Isaac Allerton advanced in years, he seems to havewithdrawn more and more from active business at New Am-sterdam, his son Isaac Allerton, Junior, taking his place. This
