ow the divinely appointed rights of the 44 NEW AMSTERDAM AND ITS PEOPLE superior race over the inferior, and the law of Destiny whichimperatively demanded that the latter should be flogged, as itwere, out of darkness into the light. It is only fair to say, however, that among the Dutch ofNew Netherland the slave trade exhibited its least repulsivefeatures. No important difficulties occurred between theblacks and their masters in New Amsterdam, nor do theformer seem to have been often the subjects of any seriouscriminal prosecutions. The negroes settled down into houseand farm servants; the relations between them and theirmasters were usually of a somewhat patriarchal nature, manu-missions were frequent, and sincere attachment was oftenmanifested on both sides. It was the hysterical English andtheir Recorder, Horsmanden, who were responsible for theghastly tragedy of the Negro Plot in the next century, andfor the fiendish torture of the numerous innocent victims ofthat insane delusion.

These houses fronted uponan open street, then called t Water,—the modern PearlStreet, — but upon the opposite side of the roadway was theopen shingly beach of the East River. The houses here, atthe time of our survey, stood in compact order, and weresubstantially built, most if not all of them being of brick.Though the deeds or ground briefs for most of the parcels ofland at this locality were made from 1645 to 1647, it is diffi-cult to believe that they had not been in several instancesbuilt upon at an earlier period.
