cil ordered that aboard containing the prices current should be kept in a con-spicuous position at the store. This building, however, seemsto have ceased to be used for store or warehouse purposessoon after the advent of Director-General Stuyvesant, whena new and larger structure appears to have been erected as apublic store, or pack-huys, —and used at the same time bythe government as a custom-house. This latter building, ofwhich further notice will be taken,1 stood upon the north sideof Pearl Street a short distance east of the old storehouse. The architecture of the old building was of the simplestcharacter, and the purposes for which it was used in its lateryears are not known; it was in all probability removed withina short period as an obstruction to the thoroughfare of theMarckveldt. To the right or west of the Marckveldt, and a short dis-tance beyond where it terminated upon the shore of the EastRiver, was a low bank of land projecting out to a point the 1 See page 52, post.

SCHREYERS HOEK 19 site of which is now in the Battery Park, a short distancenorth of the Staten Island Ferry-house. This was theCapske, —the cape, or point, — being the southern ter-mination of Manhattan Island; but it was more generallyknown in Dominie Bogarduss time as Schreyers Hoek. The sojourner at Amsterdam, strolling down one of the linesof street bordering the broad stream of the Amstel as it windsthrough that city, comes out upon a point of land projectinga short distance into the harbor, at the right of the riversmouth. Near it stands a venerable old battlemented towerof stone, with its roof thrown up into a high conical peak ofcurious form. Here, in the seventeenth century, the Dutchemigrants and their families usually embarked in small boatsto reach the East Indiamen or other vessels which lay in theharbor, a short distance, out beyond the curving double lineof booms near the shore.
