Description

Princess Neferuptah's "Usekh" Necklace was made of gold, carnelian, feldspar, and fired glass paste (faience). It is 10 cm high and 36.5 cm long. Neferuptah was the daughter of Pharaoh Amenemhat III of the 12th dynasty of Egypt. The necklace was discovered in 1956 by an Antiquities Service Excavations expedition in her intact Hawara tomb in a ruined brick pyramid, Southeast of Amenemhet III's pyramid.

Archeologists found this usekh collar/necklace on the breast of Neferuptah's mummy. Egyptian art frequently depicts deities, pharaohs and nobles both male and female, and ordinary citizens wearing usekhs both during their lifetime and after death to magically ward off evil. This photo was taken at the King Tut exhibition at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington State, USA...in 2012.
