In the year 966 the Venetians were in possession of theisland, but the Ragusans, from the mainland, drove themout, only to return, and to establish firmly the reign ofthe Doges. The principal town was twice entirelydestroyed, once by the Neapolitans, and once by theTurks, and the present city, which rises in an amphithe-atrical form from the shores of the principal harbor, onlydates from the year 1571. During the Napoleonic warsthe island was occupied by the French, and near it, in1810, an important naval action was fought, in which anEnglish squadron defeated the French. In the course of the war between Austria and Italy,which terminated in the entire liberation of the lattercountry from the dominion of the hated Tedeschi, whohad occupied Venice and the fairest parts of Lombardyfor so many years, Italy suffered two great defeats.
