The principal town was twice entirelydestroyed, once by the Neapolitans, and once by theTurks, and the present city, which rises in an amphithe-atrical form from the shores of the principal harbor, onlydates from the year 1571. During the Napoleonic warsthe island was occupied by the French, and near it, in1810, an important naval action was fought, in which anEnglish squadron defeated the French. In the course of the war between Austria and Italy,which terminated in the entire liberation of the lattercountry from the dominion of the hated Tedeschi, whohad occupied Venice and the fairest parts of Lombardyfor so many years, Italy suffered two great defeats. Onewas on land, at Custozza, where their army, thoughunsuccessful, came out with honor, after proofs of courageand conduct. The navy of Italy, then comparatively small and untried,was anxious to redeem the Italian honor and arms, bymeeting the Austrian fleet. Under the auspices of thenavy a desceat was therefore made upon the Austrianisland of Ljssa. On the 18th of July, 1866, the island was attacked andtaken by the fleet under Admiral Persano.
