Description
English: "The War Cross," also referred to as the "Brave and Faithful Cross" (German: "Tapferkeitskreuz") etc., was a political decoration in three classes planned to be awarded by the Nasjonal Samling (NS), Quisling's Nazi party in German-occupied Norway during World War II.
  • The award is designed as a greek cross (with arms of equal length) combined with crossed swords and the raven-and-suncross (bird and ringed cross) emblem of the NS on the face (obverse), and the motto TAPPER OG TRO ("Brave and faithful") written in "runic script" at the back (reverse). The cross is in bronze colour, with a ribbon in red and yellow, the NS party colors.
  • It remains unclear which criteria the awards adhered to and whether the decoration was ever conferred. The Cross may have been intended for brave and loyal NS members for civilian efforts in Norway and for members of the Hird, but presumably, it was especially for "front-line fighters", Norwegian soldiers volunteering in Nazi Germany's fight against Bolshevism on the Eastern Front. Some state that the war crosses were only "awarded for personal bravery towards the enemy and outstanding leadership of the unit."
According to Dereks Militaria, the Brave and Faithful Crosses were produced but never distributed. The reason is said to be that the German High Command, and Reich Commissar Terboven, opposed a Norwegian decoration that competed with German awards. The entire production of the Brave and Faithful Crosses is said to have been found in storage in the 1970s and was transferred to the Armed Forces Museum (Forsvarsmuseet) in Oslo, Norway.
According to www.waffen-ss.it and www.warrelics.eu, a few crosses in "political version" with the inscription "1941" were reportedly given to NS members in 1944.
  • The decoration in the picture may be a replica (copy) made after the war.


Norsk bokmål: Krigskorsordenen, også omtalt som Tapper og tro-korset og Tapper og tro-medaljen (tysk: Tapferkeitskreuz), var en utmerkelse i tre klasser planlagt utdelt av Nasjonal Samling (NS), Quislings nazistparti i det tyskokkuperte Norge under andre verdenskrig).
  • Ordenstegnet er utformet som et gresk (likearmet) kors med korslagte sverd, ravn og solkors (NS' «solørn») foran, og mottoet «TAPPER OG TRO» skrevet med rune-liknende bokstaver bak. Korset er i bronse, med bånd i rødt og gult, NS' partifarger.
  • Det er uklart hvilke kritierier tildelingene fulgte, og om utmerkelsen noensinne ble delt ut. Tapper og tro-korset kan ha vært beregnet for tapre og trofaste NS-medlemmer, for sivil innsats i Norge og til medlemmer av Hirden, men antakelig særlig til frontkjempere i Nazi-Tysklands kamp mot bolsjevismen på østfronten. Enkelte oppgir at krigskorsene bare ble «tildelt for personlig tapperhet ovenfor fienden og for fremragende føring av avdelingen».
I følge Dereks Militaria ble Tapper og tro-korsene produsert, men aldri delt ut. Grunnen skal være at den tyske overkommandoen, og angivelig også rikskommissær Josef Terboven, motsatte seg en norsk utmerkelse som konkurrerte med tyske. Hele produksjonen av Tapper og tro-korsene skal ha blitt funnet på et lager i 1970-årene, og overført til Hjemmefrontmuseet på Akershus festning, siden til Forsvarsmuseet.
I følge www.waffen-ss.it og www.warrelics.eu skal noen få merker i «politisk utgave» med innskripsjonen «1941» ha blitt gitt til NS-medlemmer i 1944.
  • Utmerkelsen på bildet kan være en replika (kopi) laget etter krigen.
