日本語: 夕顔 (宇多源氏佐々木氏流塩冶氏流)

戦国時代、伯耆国東伯郡の羽衣石城に拠り　伯耆守護山名氏を凌駕する勢力を誇った南条氏は近江源氏佐々木氏の一族と伝えている。　『羽衣石南条記』などによれば、塩冶高貞の子高秀が貞治五年（1366）伯耆羽衣石に城を築き、南条伯耆守貞宗と名を改めたとしている。また『因幡民談記』では初代貞宗は明徳二年（1391）に没し、以後「嫡子宮内少輔景宗、景宗の嫡孫但馬守宗貞、其の子宗皓、嫡子豊後守宗元」の系譜をあげ、伯耆守護山名氏に属して発展していったと記している。

南条氏が祖とする塩冶高貞は塩冶判官として知られ、元弘の乱に活躍して出雲・隠岐守護に補任された。ところが、高貞の妻に懸想した高師直の讒言によって京都を出奔、山名時氏・桃井直常ら幕府軍に追われ播磨国影山において自害した。この高師直の一件は、「仮名手本忠臣蔵」として世に流布しているが真偽のほどは定かではない。

　『訳文大日本史』には、「高貞、二子あり、母に従ひて出でて走りしが、長子は母と同じく陰山で死したれば、八幡六郎、次子を覓めて窃に路傍の僧に託し、携へて出雲に至らしめたるに、既に長じて、弓矢に便ひ、佐々木氏頼に依りしを、宗人、呼びて出雲殿となせり」と、高貞の次子が助けられたことを記している。そして、高秀は旧臣の妻の尼にひきとられて越前国南条郡宅良谷で成長、南条を名乗るようになったのだという。
