The Shields Daily News for 9 March 1906 reports details of a case in South Shields Police Court:
“CHARGE AGAINST A NORTH SHIELDS WOMAN
Margaret Batey (25), married, 8 King Street, North Shields, was charged on remand, with loitering in King Street for the purpose of committing a felony, on the 3rd inst. PC Robson said at a quarter to nine on Saturday night he kept observation on the prisoner, who was moving amongst a number of women who were in front of a draper’s shop. He saw the defendant touch several of the women’s pockets with her hands. He took her into custody. When he did so she had a parcel in her hands, but upon arrival at the station the parcel as missing. It was , however, brought into the station later on and it was found to contain a bundle of stockings. Det. Insp. Bruce stated that the stockings had been stolen from a shop door at North Shields. The Bench committed her to prison for one month”.
The Shields Daily News for 10 April 1906 reports:
“SHOP-DOOR THEFT AT NORTH SHIELDS
At North Shields Police Court today, Margaret Batey, married, was charged with having on March 3rd, stolen six pairs of stockings, valued at 5s 9d, from the shop door of Mr Robt. Hastie, jnr., draper, Saville Street West. Detective Inspector Bruce of the South Shields police, stated that the accused was arrested in South Shields on a charge of loitering. On the way to the police station she dropped a bundle of stockings and told witness that she had stolen them from a shop door in North Shields.
Witness communicated with the Tynemouth police. The accused had since served a month’s imprisonment in Durham Gaol. Detective Radcliffe said he apprehended the accused on her discharge from Durham Gaol and brought her to North Shields. Accused pleaded guilty and was sent to prison for a month with hard labour”.
