Summary[edit]

Description
English: Name: John Clark

Arrested for: Loitering
Arrested at: North Shields Police Station
Arrested on: 9 March 1905
Tyne and Wear Archives ref: DX1388-1-67-John Clark-1
The Shields Daily News for 9 March 1905 reports:
“SUSPICIOUS CONDUCT AT TYNEMOUTH. A POLICEMAN COMPLIMENTED.
At North Shields Police Court today, John Clark (54), no fixed abode, was charged with loitering in Tynemouth Terrace back lane for the purpose of committing a felony.
PC Telford said that shortly before 11 o’clock yesterday morning he saw the accused going about Front Street in a very suspicious manner. He was examining the shop doors and walked slowly in the direction of Tynemouth Terrace.
He went up the back lane and entered two separate back yards. Witness spoke to him and questioned him. He said that he had gone into the yard to get a drink and had got one at the tap. Witness took him back to the yard and there was no tap. The man then said that he had got a drink from the tub. There was a young woman looking down from one of the windows and she said she had seen the defendant looking about the yard in a suspicious manner and on seeing her he had cleared out. Witness, not being satisfied with the man’s story, took him into custody.
Prisoner now said that he had been looking for work at Whitley. The magistrates remanded the accused for eight days in order to make inquiries. The chairman complimented the officer for the quiet and careful way in which he had attended to the case”.
These images are a selection from an album of photographs of prisoners brought before the North Shields Police Court between 1902 and 1916 in the collection of Tyne & Wear Archives (TWA ref DX1388/1).
