Summary[edit]

Description
English: Name: Carolyn Comber

Title: Biological Science Technician

Duty station: Long Island NWR Complex

Amount of time worked in public service: 2 Years

How much of this at USFWS? 2 Years

Female Conservation Hero or Mentor? Why?

Monica Williams, Wildlife Biologist at the Long Island NWR Complex.

When you began your career, did you ever see yourself working for the USFWS?

After graduating from college I was hoping to get a job in the field of conservation biology but I didn’t have any specific plan. However, after completing my first internship at the Long Island NWR Complex I knew that working for the Service was the path for me!

The mission of the USFWS is “Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people” How do you contribute to this mission?

I contribute to the mission of the USFWS by protecting federally threatened piping plovers on the beaches of eastern Long Island. I keep piping plover nests protected from predators and people by constructing nest exclosures and by educating beachgoers about conservation. I also work on the Hurricane Sandy Saltmarsh Restoration and Enhancement project at the Long Island NWR Complex. Through this project I am working to improve salt marsh habitat within the Complex for the benefit of wildlife and people.

It takes a special person to dedicate their lives to public service. Why did you choose this path?

I choose this path because I want a career where I can make a positive difference for the environment and for wildlife.

What do you like best about working for the USFWS?

The thing that I love best about working for the USFWS is that everything that I do at work each day is ultimately to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my day!
