Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A U.S. Navy Fletcher-class destroyer underway at high speed, circa in 1944. The ship is painted in Camouflage Design 6D. Note: Although it is claimed that the photo depicts USS Johnston (DD-557), Johnston was sunk on 25 October 1944, still painted in Camouflage Measure 21. It was planned that she was to be painted in Camouflage Measure 32, Design 6D, but the last known photo of Johnston on 12 September 1944 shows her still painted in Measure 21. Note that no pennant number is visible fore and aft, leading to the suggestion that this photo was retouched to let it appear as the sunken Johnston.
Original description: "USS Johnston (DD-557), port side view of ship underway in 1944. Photograph retouched by censor. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the Naval History and Heritage Command."
