Summary

[edit]
Description In 1965 one Sikorsky SH-3A Sea King helicopter (U.S. Navy BuNo 148033, new Sikorsky designation S-61F) was converted for high speed research, with a modified fuselage, twin tubojets, stub wings and a 6-bladed rotor. It was tested by the US Navy and the US Army for total of 88 hours of tests that explored performance, handling qualities, stresses, vibrations and control loads for eight different configurations. The primary objective of the program, to extend tests of the compound configuration to a maximum safe speed of not less than 200 knots (370 km/h), was achieved. Level flight and dive speeds of 211 (391 km/h) and 230 knots (426 km/h), respectively, were reached.
