This is a N64 controller with the back and electronics removed. Note the buttons and hole for the control stick.

The buttons are in the rubber areas. The buttons have their recoil effect because the rubber is deformed when pressed down and then it pushes the key back up when there is no longer any pressure. This style is used in almost every button you use.
