The painting tells the story of a real incident, the punishment by the Jewish community of the city of Kremenets in Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine (then part of the Volhynian Governorate of the Russian Empire) of a Jewish girl for her relationship with a Ukrainian Orthodox boy and her transition to Orthodox Christianity. She is wearing a cross on her neck.
