Description

Mycena parabolica (Fr.) Quél.

Image location: Tualatin Hills Nature Park, Beaverton, Washington Co., Oregon, USA

Growing on conifer stumps and logs; found in three places.

Caps dark brown, stem the same color, with sheen. Stem does not break open when bent.

Odor and taste mild (raphanoid?).

Spores 8-10 × 5-7 microns. Basidia 4-spored, one measured was 25 microns long. Pleurocystidia not observed. An average cheilocystidium measured 55 × 13 microns.

M. parabolica is just the best name I can attach to this collection, obtained using Smith’s key. Maas Geesteranus does not recognize M. parabolica, claims that “Smith’s parabolica material is far from homogeneous”, and assigns some of them to M. coracina. This collection is unlikely M. coracina, which grows on humus and has larger spores (10.7-12.5 × 6.3-7.2).

Recognized by sight
