Summary[edit]

Description

Mycena acicula (Schaeff.) P. Kumm.

Image location: McClellan Ranch Preserve, Cupertino, Santa Clara Co, California, USA

Growing in small groups on rotten wood pieces and debris, in many places under a large fallen and decaying oak tree, its bark spread over a large area.

Basidia ~22×8. Spores 9.5-12 × 2.5-3.5. Cheilocystidia hard to extricate, mixed with basidia, sometimes in clumps. Basidia with visible sterigmata rare, except for the 1-spored kind, which I’m not sure are basidia at all; they might be cystidia, but mucronate cystidia are not mentioned for this species. Stipitipellis was not gelatinized (as descriptions say they should be). I struggled but couldn’t get a clear view/shot of the characteristic pseudoparenchymatous layer with the pileipellis on top. Surprising abundance and variety of diverticulate/branched hyphae in the pileipellis.
