I have been afield with hundreds of sports-men, but have yet to meet the one who canresist the temptation to shoot a grouse sit-ting in a tree. Even I myself must confessthat more than once the sight of that livingpicture has tempted me with a force that Iwas unable to resist. Not many times, how-ever—perhaps a dozen all told—have I com-mitted this sin—if sin it be—for there are severalvery excellent reasons why my victims in thisline have been few. First, it is extremely diffi-cult to locate even so large a bird as this, thoughit may be sitting in plain view, with not a leafor twig to hide its form; for it is a wise pro-vision of nature that all wild game appears tohave the miraculous power of becoming invisible32

In ad-dition to this, the partridge appears to know thatit is perfectly safe so long as you do not see it,and it keeps a wary watch upon your movements,taking instant flight when it suspects that youreye has discovered its hiding place. So abruptand often devious is the departure of the phan-tom, that the most expert shot, who is new tothis business, is rarely successful in making properconnection. It has been a rule with me to shootwhen such conditions obtain, and shoot veryquickly, and many times have I got on to the un-known angle, greatly to my satisfaction and muchto the wonder of my companions. There is still another accomplishment that thisbird has recently learned that is well worthy ofrecord.
