The pillars in the nave are circular, withhexagonal caps and bases, supporting pointedarches, above which are the clerestory-windows. The caps carry a cluster of threeshafts, from which spring the ribs of theroof vaulting. The nave is terminated bya semi-circular row of four pillars, muchmore slender than those in the nave itself,made of marble, with rich capitals decoratedwith leaves, at present smothered in bluepaint, and the shafts whitewashed! Thecaps of the nave pillars are also pickedout in blue. The columns in the apseare of an earlier date than those in thenave, and are the remains of the buildingcommenced in 1193. The fifth bay of the aisles eastwards isflanked on the north and south by a smalltransept, each terminated by a semi-circularapse. The western porch, which is of thefourteenth century, is very fine, the frontbeing very similar to the f^i^ade of St.Nicolas, Famagusta, and extends the whole •36
