It contains a mosque, a large Latinconvent with a spacious church attached, andtwo smaller Greek churches. One of these, the Christo Poleidissa, has a very quaintold door adorned with curious, very Indian-looking carving, and over it a wonderfulpainting of the Virgin and Child executedabout the middle of last century. Thecarving is spoilt, however, by being filledup with whitewash, and, consequently hardlyshows to advantage in the photograph Itook of it. It containssome good paintings by Italian artists, par-ticularly one of John the Baptist, dated 1878,and signed Chcrubini. There are also other 44

The new town of Marina is built close alongthe sea-front, there being little or no tideto allow for, and one can almost dive fromthe balcony of a front room in the hotel intothe sea. There are two theories as to the formationof the salt, which is collected and heaped upin quantities of several tons in the summerand sold for about i ^d. for three pounds. Onetheory is that the sea water filters throughthe sand and fills the lake, which in the summermonths is evaporated quicker than the supplycan percolate through, thus leaving a thickcoating: of salt over the soil. The othertheory, which is the one I consider mostprobable, is that the soil is already impreg-nated with salt, and that the water in it isoriginally fresh water, brought there by astream which is fed by the winter
