През септември 1878 Хорейшо Хърбърт Кичънър, тогава млад лейтенант, е прехвърлен от Палестина в Кипър, за да оглави проучванията на териториите на острова. За ефективното управление на острова е било необходимо да се изработи точна карта.

Поради различия с върховния комисар и недостиг на средства през май 1879 проектът е изоставен. Наследникът на комисаря, сър Робърт Бидълф обаче, иска от Кичънър да възобнови земемерската си работа на острова. През 1885 година той завършва една карта, съдържаща 15 листа, която е използвана в продължение на много години.

Докато е на острова Кичънър полага сериозни усилия за създаването на Кипърския музей. Освен това е поддръжник на Асоциацията на състезателните конни надбягвания в Кипър и скоро след пристигането си печели състезанието с арабската си кобила.

English: Horatio Herbert Kitchener

In September 1878 Horatio Herbert Kitchener, then a yong lieutenant, was transferred from Palestine to Cyprus to head a land survey. An accurate map was required for the efficient administration of the island.

The project was abandoned in May 1879 after differences with the High Commissioner and a shortage of funds. Wolseley's succesor, Sir Robert Biddulph however requested Kitchener to resume his work on the triangulation of the island and special surveys. By 1885 he had completed a map in fifteen sheets, which was in use for many years.

While on the island Kitchener made a major efforts to establish the Cyprus museum. He was also a supporter of the Cyprus Horse racing Association and won a race on his Arab mare shortly after his arrival.
