Summary[edit]

Description
English: Muriel Goggin would be Merrill Denison's first wife. Muriel was 10 years younger than Merrill. They met at Hart House in Toronto. Muriel was also an author, writing under the pen name of Frances Newton. She wrote using this name in Reader's Digest, This Week, McCall's and other magazines.

Born in Winnipeg, she was educated at Havergal College, Edgehill School and the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto).
Using her childhood experiences in the Northwest Territories she wrote the popular girl's book 'Susannah of the Mounties' and its sequels set in the years 1896-1900, featuring Susannah Winston, age 9-13. 'Susanna of the Mounties' was made into a successful movie starring Shirley Temple. Sequels included 'Susannah of the Yukon', 'Susannah at Boarding School' and 'Susannah Rides Again'.
Muriel managed the Bon Echo Inn even before marriage in 1926 and continued until ill health made this impossible. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1942 and died in 1954 after a prolonged illness.
