k Salvation was ascompletely repugnant to the tastes of this community as itwould be to a respectable Church of England congregationin the West End of London. Still more distasteful,especially to the women, was the idea of speaking in publicand testifying about the blessing they had received. Butit was a repetition of the glorious scenes spoken of in theActs of the Apostles, when the Holy Ghost fell upon theconverts and they immediately began in the joy of theirhearts to speak with tongues ! During the commencement of this campaign we madethe Maduwa our home, as well as the Headquarters andmeeting-place. The benches consisted of planks sawn fromthe trunk of palm trees, attached to sections of other trunkswhich were cut transversely and fixed in the ground.With a tambourine for a pillow, and nothing softer than theplank for a bed, we became such experts that we couldbalance ourselves on the narrowest of them. After a few weeks, however, we transferred our Head- 6o Forty Years in India.

This led to ourstriking up a friendship with the fishermen who ply theirtrade along the coast. The following account of how this came about waswritten at the time, and gives an interesting glimpse of whatoccurred :— Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. Theysay unto him. We also go with thee ! It is a beautiful moonlight night. The meeting isover and our hearts are full of joy, for we have had aglorious haul of fish—human fish—about seventeen ofthem in the net, as we pulled it to shore. We felt readyfor anything the Lord might want of us. I told Him so.The Lord took us at our word and gave us a surprise. Captain Weerasooriya and myself went down to thebeach for our cust
