Summary[edit]

Description
English: Haig and Balfour, Versailles, July 1918. This photograph, which has a French press stamp, shows Arthur Balfour (1848-1930) and Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) sitting side by side on a park bench in the grounds at Versailles. They were both attending one of the Inter-Allied conferences which tried to foster co-operation between the sometimes conflicting interests of the Allies.

Balfour, a Conservative politician, had been British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905, when the Liberals came to power. During the course of the war he had been First Lord of the Admiralty from 1915 to 1916 and then Foreign Secretary.
