Summary[edit]
DescriptionMountain mint, Monardella odoratissima subsp. glauca (24698050157).jpg |
mountain mint, Monardella odoratissima subsp. glauca, California, White Mountains, Cottonwood Basin, Poison Creek, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 3043 m (9985 ft). Known also as mountain pennyroyal or coyote mint, this is a truly common plant in the mountains of the southwestern United States, where it ascends to subalpine elevations. As the scientific name implies, nothing beats the scent that lingers after walking through a patch of it. (If you are into mint, anyway.) Species boundaries are not always very clear in the genus Monardella, so this is the best name I know of for these plants at the moment. Also visible here are whitestem goldenbush (Ericameria discoidea), spike fescue (Festuca kingii), wild tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), and ancient bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva). |
