Summary[edit]
DescriptionMount Hope Mother House, Orphanage and Home for the Aged - Richmond St., College Ave., and Grosvenor St. (14981213022).jpg |
English: London, Ontario. Located on the original Barker House property, Mount Hope served as Mother House for the Sisters of St. Joseph, as well as an orphanage and care facility for the elderly. Seventeen orphans arrived at the opening, but that number soon grew to fifty. By June 1870, elderly men and women from Victoria Hospital and the Municipal Home for the Aged also came to live there. In 1876, Mount Hope was expanded to provide more room for its residents. In 1899, the orphans and Sisters moved to the new Mother House, which was renamed Mount St. Joseph. The elderly residents stayed at Mount Hope, which was renamed House of Providence. The House of Providence was demolished in 1980. |
