Summary[edit]

Description
English: Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 130 Northland Avenue, Buffalo, New York, February 2021. One-and-a-half stories in height, this relatively nondescript building of brick covered in vinyl siding near the front has unfortunately lost almost all of its original architectural detail. However, it retains historical importance not only as home of several of the earliest African-American religious congregations to set up shop in the Hamlin Park section of the city, but also as the former home of John E. Beckman (1857-1939), a stationary engingeer who served at various times as superintendent of the Iroquois Hotel, Ellicott Square Building, and City and County Hall but is perhaps most notable as the inventor of a boiler system that was widely used on U.S. Navy vessels during the Spanish-American War era. Beckman lived in the house from its completion in 1902 until his death. The building continued serving as a private residence for a short period thereafter, but was converted for use as a church around 1942: initially it served for various periods (concurrent with each other in some cases) as the home of the East Side Seventh Day Adventist Church, Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church, and Cold Spring Baptist Church, then in 1950 became home of the Second Temple Baptist Church, which moved to its current location in Lackawanna in 1971 and sold the building to its current owner, Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
