In going toward Edinburgh, we passed manyrows of typical Scotch cottages, but outside thecities there was little sign of abject poverty. Cfjapter ^ebenteen ^lons tfie Calebontan Canal en route to ®hm INVERNESS, often referred to as the *Tapi-tal of the Highlands, is the great center ofall tourist travel in the north of Scotland.It is pleasantly situated at a point where theNess River enters the Beauly Firth. This river,which has a tremendous tidal current, flowsdirectly through the town and is almost at thefront door of the Alexandra Hotel, where we werepleasantly housed during our stay. We weretold that within a few miles of the town thesalmon fishing in the river was excellent.
