Description
Italiano: Cairo, Moschea Muhammad Ali

Fu costruita fra il 1824 ed il 1848 nello stile turco delle moschee di Istanbul. La Moschea di Muhammad Ali è una delle più imponente e spettacoare nella Cittadella. È detta anche la Moschea di Alabastro per il materiale utilizzato nel rivestimento. Il cortile porticato presenta al centro una fontana per le abluzioni e ha una piccola torre quadrata con orologio.

L'interno delle moschee è spoglio di qualsiasi figurazione umana e divina a causa di un espresso divieto della religione musulmana questo ha portato gli artisti a sviluppare temi decorativi geometrici e varie forme di calligrafia molto arabescata per riportare sulle pareti i versetti del Corano. Queste scritture sono talmente elaborate che solo specialisti riescono a leggerle. Anche la moschea di Alabastro si attiene a questi canoni, in più è arricchita da coloratissime vetrate e immensi lampadari. Nella terrazza-giardino sul retro della moschea si domina un vasto panorama della città e dei dintorni anche se sotto il parapetto, purtroppo, si trova una discarica di rifiuti.
