O prédio do Palácio Cruz e Souza foi construído pelo governador Brigadeiro José da Silva Paes com o objetivo de torná-lo o Palácio do Governo do Estado. Na construção, os detalhes portugueses e açorianos eram visíveis e a cor do prédio era branca. A casa do governo nem sempre manteve a arquitetura. Em 1785, o prédio era dividido em três seções e dois pavimentos. Ampliado em 1977, para logo em seguida, em 1979, ser rebatizado de Palácio Cruz e Sousa, uma homenagem ao poeta catarinense de mesmo nome. Cinco anos mais tarde, 1984, o Palácio é tombado como Patrimônio Histórico de Santa Catarina e passa por nova restauração. Em 1986, o local é reaberto e passou a abrigar o Museu Histórico de Santa Catarina Palácio Cruz e Sousa. Atualmente, o Palácio também abriga o centenário Instituto Histórico e Geográfico de Santa Catarina. Na sala Martinho de Haro, ocorrem lançamentos e exposições sobre arte e história.
