MONUMENT TO CAPTAIN BOYD. IT was our pleasing duty to give in the Number of this Journal for the 7th ult. a full-sized Illustration of the silver medal presented by the Board of Trade to the widow of Captain Boyd, of the Ajax, for his gallant, though unsuccessful. attempt to save the crew of the Neptune in Kingstown harbour on the 9th of February last. Our present Number contains an Engravng (from a photograph by H. D. Brown, of Lower George's-street, Kingstown) of a monument erected by public subscription in Monkstown Churchyard, near Kingstown, to the memory of Capt. Boyd and of the five seamen who perished with him. This monument, which is 8ft. 2in. high, bears on its sides the following inscriptions:In memory of Captain John M'Neil Boyd, R.N.; John Curry, able seaman; Thomas Murry, able seaman; John Russell, ordinary seaman; James Johnson, ordinary seaumin; Alexander Forsythe, ordinary seaman; who lost their lives on the outside of the east pier at Kingstown, in noble efforts to rescue the crew of the wrecked brig Neptune, during a fearful gale from the E.N.E., on the 9th of February, 1861. To commemorate the death of six brave sailors of H.M.S. Ajax this monument is raised. The providence of God ordained that they should die, not on board their ship defending their country, but as Christian men seeking to save their perishing brethren. They glorified God, whose waves went over them, by a death not unmeet for sailors of Christain Britain. " Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."-John iv. 13. Erected by Commodore Hastings R. Yelverton, C.B., Controller-General of the Coast Guard, the officers and ship's company (including tenders) of H.M.S. Ajax, and the officers and men of the Kingstown district of Coast Guard.
