Description
English: St Mary's Church, Tittleshall, Norfolk - monument (south wall of chancel, with busts and coloured shields) to Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester (1697–1759). He married Lady Margaret Tufton, 19th Baroness de Clifford, 3rd daughter of w:Thomas Tufton, 6th Earl of Thanet by his wife Lady Catherine Cavendish. Lady Margaret Tufton was a descendant of the Earls of Cumberland. He was created a Knight of the Bath by George II, Baron of Minster Lovell, Viscount Coke of Holkham, and Earl of Leicester. He died April 20th, 1759, aged 61. His wife died February 28th, 1775, in her 75th year. He had one son, Edward, Lord Viscount Coke, who died at Greenwich, August 30th, 1753, aged 34, having married Lady Mary Campbell, youngest daughter of John Campbell, Duke of Argyle. One shield, Coke quarterly of 4, overall an inescutcheon of pretence of Tufton:

  • 1: Per pale gules and azure, three eagles displayed argent (Coke)
  • 2: Gules, on a chief indented sable three martlets argent (Lovelace)
  • 3: Argent, six fleurs-de-lys azure a chief indented or (Paston)
  • 4: Quarterly ermine and paly of six or and gules (Knightley)

On an inescutcheon of pretence, quarterly of 4:

  • 1: Sable, an eagle displayed argent a bordure of the second (Tufton)
  • 2: Quarterly or and gules, a bend vair (Sackville)
  • 3: Chequy argent and gules, a fess of the second (Clifford) (alternatively: Chequy or and azure, a fesse gules)
  • 4: Azure, three horseshoes/horse barnacles or (? unknown, heiress of Clifford, quartered by Clifford)
Crest and Motto: Coke. This shield is ensigned with an earl's coronet, having the ribbon, motto, and badge of the Order of the Bath. It is supported on the dexter side by an ostrich gorged with a ducal coronet, and on the sinister by a wivern.
