The falls in theriver furnish immense water-power for manufactiuing pur-poses. 28. Ihc other Important Towns are Albany, Corvallis,Eugene City, Dalles, Astoria, and Jacksonville. 29. Public Education has received much attention. Be-sides the excellent public .schools, there are colleges at Salem,Forest Grove, anil Corvallis, and numerous academies through-out the State. 30. The Legislature asf^emhlcH every two yenrs. The mem-bers of th(! Senate are elected for four years, and of the Housofor two years. 31. Oregon was Organized as a Territory of the UnitedStates in 1848, when it extended northward to British America,and eastward to the Rocky Mountains. 32. From its JVorfhcrn half, Washington Territory was or-ganized in 1853; and in 1859, Oregon was admitted as a Statewith its present boundaries.
