Summary[edit]
DescriptionMonkey Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 630983.jpg |
English: Monkey Bridge The local name for the bridge which originally provided a railway and footbridge crossing of the River Irwell at the old Bury and Radcliffe boundary long before Warth road bridge was built downstream. The railway, which used to carry the electrified line from Manchester to Bury, has been converted to a light tramway system and the picture shows a Manchester bound Metrolink tram. Fifty years ago the Irwell was very polluted and it wasn't unusual for the river to be covered in foam when detergents were introduced to industry in the 1950s. The river is now so clean that there is an abundance of wildlife nearby and the local angling club has established fishing rights here. |
