Summary[edit]

Description

William Lang of Thames was working alone "stoping" - cutting step-like workings - in the Moanataiari Mine, when a lump of rock fell, pinning his leg and causing a complex fracture on August 3 1893. Fortunately he was able to get to the surface where he was found by three boys who were playing in the area. They went for help, and Lang was taken to Thames Hospital for treatment. The hospital admissions register [YCAH 14075/1a] shows that he was in the hospital for 78 days.

Two years later he was admitted again (19 March 1895), following a blasting accident at Eureka Hill, which resulted in the amputation of his thumb. Mining always was a dangerous job.

(Reports of both accidents can be found on Papers Past, and thanks to Auckland Regional Office's volunteers who indexed the Thames Hospital register.)
