Summary[edit]
DescriptionMine craters at St. Eloi (4687892179).jpg |
English: Aerial photograph, St Eloi, near Ypres, Belgium, 27 March 1916. This aerial photograph was taken on 27 March 1916 after the British had exploded six very large mines at the same time, to knock out the German defence before the Allies advanced. The new huge mine craters can be seen looking like four hills in a line up the centre of the photograph. Field Marshal (Earl) Haig (1861-1928) described the action, 'The operation was begun by the firing of six very large mines; the charge was so heavy that the explosion was felt in towns several miles behind the lines, and large numbers of the enemy were killed. Half a minute after the explosion our infantry attack was launched aiming at the German Second Line.' |
