Summary[edit]

Description
English: (1 in a multiple picture set)

I took this picture for two reasons:
1) It is one of the most beautiful back yards I've ever seen, and
2) It is of histoical interest. This is one of the few locations near Redlands, CA where the Mill Creek Sanja (pronounced "Sahn-ya") flows above ground all year. A few miles to the west as it gets into Redlands, it's flow is under land and buildings.
Spanish missionaries introduced the principle of irrigation in San Bernardino Valley, thus opening the way to settlement. Franciscan Fathers engineered, and Indians dug, this first ditch (or 'zanja') in 1819-20. In historical sequence the zanja supported the San Bernardino Asistencia, Rancho San Bernardino, pioneer ranches, orchards, and Redlands' domestic water supply

The correct Spanish pronunciation is 'sahn-ya,' but most locals pronounce it as 'sank-ee.'
