CHAP. XXV. TULA. 223 contains about 12,000 inhabitants, and is famous for its hams andsausages; a dirty river runs through the centre of the town atthe bottom of a barranca or deep ravine, on the banks of whichwere innumerable pigs, thin, long-snouted, and almost wild;apparently living but poorly on what the stream afforded ! Theywould require much better feeding before they could sustain thecharacter of the place for its celebrated commodity. To say thebroad well-paved side-paths on both sides of the streets werethe best feature of the town is, perhaps, the highest complimenta casual visitor can pay its inhabitants. The return journey by diligence to Mexico City was worsethan the going out, and we had a heavy thunderstorm, on thehighest part of the mountain-pass, which drenched us outsidepassengers to the skin, to say nothing of the terror we sufferedfrom lightning. Tula is a small town, having from 3000 to 4000 inhabitants;it boasts of a large market square, with a garden in the cen
