or handbag,beautifully made and exquisitely carved by the Mexican workmen.Cotton manufacture in the Republic has grown largely in recentyears and in the capital city large supplies are annually placed uponthe market from 10 or more local mills operated by modern ma-chinery. That which is said of cotton manufacture is also true ofthe making of woolen cloth, shawls, blankets, etc., the most importantfactory being ia the State of Mexico not far from the capital city; ithas nearly 5,000 spuidles, 117 looms, and normally about 800 opera-tives. Mexico City also has a linen mill, and in surbuban towns ornear at hand is produced the bulk of news-print paper used by theprinting establishments of the capital. Within the federal districtare many cigar and cigarette factories, which not only give employ-ment to thousands of workers, but supply a growing demand.
