14 MEXICO, THE CITY OF PALACES. hills and moimtaiiis. A wat.nworks system, utilizing the springs ofadjacent mountains, supplies the city to-day with an abundance ofpure water and also Hushes the canals, aided partly by mechanicalpressure. The whole system has cost the municipality more thanS5,000,000. Mexico Citys streets run north and south and east and west, withmany new and broad avenues that offer interesting contrasts to thenarrow streets or callejons constructed in former eras. Theyare usually level and the newer ones well paved or constructed inaccordance with modern street paving methods. On older streetsthe long popular cobble stones are still to be seen. The beautifulavenue known as the Paseo de la Reforma, stretching about 3 milesfrom the city proper to the Hill of Chapultepec, is a model of its kind. Many of the worlds avenues were examined and studied by a Mexicanstreet commission, and numerous points of utility or excellence wereadopted for the Paseo de la Reforma.
