Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Congressional medal authorized February 24, 1873 to be presented to each of Captain Jared S. Crandall and 9 others for their rescue of 32 persons from the steamer Metis on August 31, 1872. From the U. S. Coast Guard Museum Collection. Not stated which individual this medal was awarded to (names where engraved on the reverse), nor what metal the medal is made of. Although listed here http://history.house.gov/Institution/Gold-Medal/Gold-Medal-Recipients/ as a Congressional Gold Medal, the authorizing statute (42nd Congress, 17 Stat. 638) does not specify gold medals, but leaves it to the discretion of the President. It is unclear if any were gold.
