SPINNING-WHORLS OF BLACK CLAY. ±J*£h H£5 in the tombs various specimens of spinning-whorls of unbaked, or sun-baked, clay. These are rendered doubly interesting by the designs which decorate them, themotives of which are difficult to divine. A considerable number of these whorlswere secured from the people of the neighbouring villages, who said they had foundthem among the ruins of the ancient city—a statement which there is little cause todoubt. As similar objects have been found in North-Western Asia Minor1 and inthe north of Syria,2 we reproduce above a drawing which shows a selection ofcharacteristic shapes and decorations. 1 Schuchhardt, Schliemaiis Excavations, p. 42. 2 Liv., Annals of Arch., i. 4.
